How do I choose the type of yacht I want to charter?

Choosing your yacht usually depends on the amount of time you have and how much you want to see. Whether you choose a holiday which is laid back and at stress free pace or whether you choose a holiday where you are on the go continuously are factors you must consider. An additional factor is of course price. The types of yachts available for charter are divided into two groups - Bareboat or crewed yachts. Bareboat yachts can either be small motor yachts up to 12 m or sailing yachts up to 20 m. If this is the type of charter you wish to choose and are not qualified, you are in the position to hire a skipper. Bareboat motor yachts are usually much smaller in living space than a sailing yacht of the same size, the speed of course is much quicker than that of a sailing yacht but something to keep in mind is that your fuel consumption is much higher. Sailing yachts on the other hand have much more living and deck space. The second category is crewed yachts which are divided into three sub sections - crewed motor yachts - crewed motor sailers - crewed sailing yachts Crewed motor yachts are sometimes capable of reaching speed over 20 knots, this of course allows you to see much more in a shorter amount of time, but when weather is heavy they can become uncomfortable.Displacement motor yachts are slower, averaging speeds of 10 to 14 knots, they are far more comfortable when heavier weather sets in. Crewed Motor Sailers have a more spacious interior than a crewed sailing yacht but of course does not have the performance that the CSY has under sail. The larger engines allow for cruising under power alone. Crewed Sailing Yachts have the capability of cruising under motor at speeds of up to 10 knots but also combine the exhilaration of performance under sail.
